The Official Launch of John Dixon, Air Hawk and the Flying Doctor at The Avid Reader in West End, Brisbane. See those who were in among the action. A Picture Says a Thousand Words, they say; so apart from adding names to the photos, I shall say little... !!  COMICOZ Publisher and "John Dixon, Air Hawk and the Flying Doctor" Editor Nat Karmichael before the Show: a mixture of nervous excitement, mixed with euphoria and worry that it will all go flat, and wondering why it is taking Carlene and Rhonda so long to arrive....  Audience Participation and Product Identification was undertaken with much enthusiasm...!  John Dixon's daughter Jaydi Munns letting out a secret about the AIR HAWK character, Janet Grant, to all at the Book Launch. The Secret? Well, you had to have been there....!!  Russell Ousley, General Manager Marketing and Fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) happily accepts a $1,000 cheque from Comicoz Head (*ahem!*) Nat Karmichael....  From Left to Right: Jan Rhoades (John Panel By Panel Ryan's first wife), Jaydi Munns (John Air Hawk Dixon's only daughter), Russell Ousley (Royal Flying Doctor Service's Queensland Section's General Manager Marketing and Fundraising) and Nat Karmichael (Carlene Comicoz Karmichael's present husband) all put on happy poses for the camera-man, Terry Cooke (John Air Hawk Dixon's nephew)...  Nat's sister Sheryl Sandy compares the AIR HAWK character Jim Hawk with her husband Mark Kleinschmidt. Sorry, Jim, no comparison: Sheryl is sticking with Mark...!! Happily married now for almost 30 years...!! Thanks for coming, Mark and Sheryl.  More wonderful AIR HAWK Fans: from the youngest ... Bonnie Mickan and her mum PJ. (Who is that in the background?), with Kerin and Barney Davis, and to a headache-stricken Carlene Karmichael. (Yes, THAT is why she was late: and spent the next 24 hours in bed recovering....) Did I say earlier that I was going to say little....?!  More wonderful audience participation! A Great Big Thank You to EVERYONE who came and who took part: Certainly the Avid Reader staff were surprised at numbers ... they had earlier arranged a little area inside with SIX seats! Never under-estimate the pull of an AIR HAWK Book Launch! And so, even though it was a little cool outside, the company and interaction kept us all warm!  Everyone intently listening to Nat Karmichael's Speech.  Nat signing a book for newly-converted AIR HAWK Fan, Sabrina Sullivan! Thanks for coming, Sabrina!  Jan and Jaydi had not seen each other for YEARS before this Book Launch. (True story.) Isn't it marvelous how a wonderful social event like this can bring people together? There were a lot of strangers at the beginning of the night, but by the end of the evening, EVERYONE had met at least ONE new friend!  Musician John Wright becoming very chummy with Air Hawk Fan Rhonda. (And who is that in the background? Thanks for coming D&C!) The highlight of the night for all the Air Hawk Fans who pre-ordered Limited Edition Signed and Numbered copies of the book, with a Special Edition winging their way for the lucky winner of the draw. Supervising the draw to ensure it was impartial is Nat Karmichael, Holding the entrants tickets in the hat is Carlene Karmichael and drawing the lucky name is Jaydi Munns. In the far right hoping his name will be drawn is Graeme Cliffe. Sad to say, Graeme was disappointed, but winning the prize (and not being able to be present) was...JOHN CLEMENTS! |
Comicoz is Nat Karmichael's publishing imprint. Nat is committed to preserving a permanent collection of Australian comic and comic strips. He feels that there is a need to recognise comics' contribution to and depiction of Australian culture.

Since 2011, Nat has self-published over twelve comic-related books and was Publisher-Editor of Oi Oi Oi! -- the last series of nationally-distributed comic books of original stories to appear on Australian newsstands. He is a member of the Australian Cartoonists Association and edited the Association's journal Inkspot for 14 issues from late 2015. He remains the Lead Judge in the Ledger of Honour Awards for the Comic Arts Awards of Australia (formerly the Ledgers). Nat has now retired from his former occupation as a Clinical Nurse in the Psychiatric Emergency Centre in Queensland's largest public hospital, so that he can spend more time with his long-suffering wife and their six children and fourteen grandchildren. He still plans to publish more comics and comic-related books, the details of which you should see here in the coming months...
