There's a lot going on this month. Yesterday I told you about The 2015 Rotary Cartoon Awards at Coffs Harbour's Bunker Cartoon Gallery. I've already mentioned the Copier Jam! Exhibition that Comicoz is taking part in, at Childers. Well, here's another event!
The Zine and Indie Comics Symposium, or ZICS as it is more commonly known, is now in its third year and is being held on the weekend of August 22 and 23 at The Edge. That's in the Brisbane's Cultural Centre (near the State Library). What's that to do with this month? Well, like last year (and the year before that!) the collective is seeking funds to get the project underway! They have a Pozible Campaign on the go ... and they need your support! At the moment they are only 25% of the way there. So, have a look at the Rewards on offer, and see if you can't help out!
TO all my independent comic and zine-publishing Friends, why not support this initiative and buy a table to sell your wares? The cost is ultra-cheap, compared to some of the other markets and conventions you support....so, I say, get on board! And if you are from out of town, and are looking for a place to board...get in touch with me!
Comicoz is Nat Karmichael's publishing imprint. Nat is committed to preserving a permanent collection of Australian comic and comic strips. He feels that there is a need to recognise comics' contribution to and depiction of Australian culture.
Since 2011, Nat has self-published over twelve comic-related books and was Publisher-Editor of
Oi Oi Oi! -- the last series of nationally-distributed comic books of original stories to appear on Australian newsstands. He is a member of the Australian Cartoonists Association and edited the Association's journal Inkspot for 14 issues from late 2015. For numerous years he was the Lead Judge in the Ledger of Honour Awards for the Comic Arts Awards of Australia (formerly the Ledgers). These days Nat dreams of retiring from his occupation as a Clinical Nurse in the Psychiatric Emergency Centre in Queensland's largest public hospital, so that he can spend more time with his long-suffering wife and their six children and fourteen grandchildren. And perhaps publish some more comic-related books.
Comicoz acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay respects to elders, past, present, and emerging, and extend that respect to all First Nations peoples.
