Oi Oi Oi! Special Nostalgia Edition
The Special Nostalgia Edition was released in the Summer of 2016 - and is actually the eighth in the series.
This issue was not released on the newsagent's shelves. It was issued after a Pozible campaign to raise both awareness and much needed funds to help continue the magazine. I decided to call it a Special Nostalgia Edition because many of the contents came from the past. Let me explain. In the early 1980s, I published an anthology and invited Australian cartoonists and artists to contribute to a second edition, and some of the contents of this issue come from that era after that second issue was never released.
I was able to coax Glenn Lumsden to come out of 'retirement' to produce the special cover, which was the basis of earning him the Australian Cartoonists' Association's Stanley Award for Comic Book Art that year. It's worth the price of the issue alone in my opinion!
Inside the issue are 32 black and white pages. The paper stock was especially selected, as it was off-white (a little yellow, in fact) to give the magazine an 'old' feel. There are stories inside that are either from the eighties or have some relation to times past. Featured are Bruce Mutard, Daryl and the late, great Ian Eddy, Jim Stratmann and Rob Feldman.
However, the main highlight and value of this magazine remains the historical recounting of the modern-day 'discovery' of the 1933 Stan Cross original cartoon 'For Gorsakes Stop Laughing - this is Serious' that has now been donated to the National Library of Australia. This article is the only recording of the events that took place by all the participants, and will have a future historical importance for all Australian comic historians.
I was most precious about not selling this issue individually when I first published it unless the reader was willing to take out a subscription. These days, with copies aplenty in my garage, I have swallowed my pride and allow the issue to be sold alone. Although, perhaps of all the issues of Oi Oi Oi! it is this one that I am most proud.
Again, with feeling, designed by Ryan McDonald-Smith. Edited, with passion, by Nat Karmichael. Printed, with thanks, by King Wang.
This comic was specifically targeted to a specific audience interested in comic book and strip history, although no-one should be offended by most of the themes inside. It's simply a good Aussie comic, and one that will be much sought after in the years to come in the Collector's market! (You cannot say now that you have not been told!)
